About this role


This role aimed at an experienced Environmental fate expert, with a proven track record in delivery of European pesticide fate regulatory risk assessments, to support Syngenta’s expanding portfolio of world class products. The successful candidate will become part of the global Product Safety function at the UK site in the platform of Environmental Safety. Working together with approximately 60 highly qualified and experienced environmental colleagues, the candidate will also become part of a number of project teams which are focused on the support and successful development of Syngenta crop protection products covering the productlifecycle. 


 


This job requires a diverse multidisciplinary skill set and offers the candidate the opportunity to get a broad understanding of both the technical and regulatory aspects of Syngenta’s active ingredients.


Individual roles in time are likely to cover the following:



  • Lead the Environmental Safety fate input into project teams; both technical and Syngenta project training support will be provided.

  • Utilise environmental fate data and modelling to develop risk assessments and documented positions for European and global regulatory dossiers.

  • Support Regulatory colleagues with dossier preparation and responses to Regulatory Authorities in Europe and worldwide.

  • Work with experts outside of Environmental Safety such as metabolism chemists, toxicologists, ecological risk assessors, chemists, operator safety and residue experts together with a regulatory lead for the active ingredient.

  • Support re-registration of existing compounds through critical evaluation of the existing data package with foresight of upcoming regulatory Guidance changes.

  • Represent Syngenta in meetings with external regulatory agencies to discuss and successfully advocate our technical positions to address their questions and concerns.

  • Propose, deliver and present relevant novel research and positions at scientific conferences.

  • Deliver high level science inputs to within the Product Safety organization to support the management of technical issues.

  • After fully developing in the role you may become involved with developing new active ingredients, collaborating with metabolism and fate studies teams to develop the correct data package, predicting the environmental fate safety profile emerging from the data and chemical properties.

  • Some international business travel is likely to be required.

Capabilities  



  • Integration of  complex data sets to develop credible technical positions

  • Excellent skills in advocating technical positions and effectively communicating risks within project teams, to other Business areas and to external Regulators.

  • Ability to manage risk and uncertainty in multiple projects within the framework of  a changing environment.

  • Think creatively and solve problems.


Knowledge and experience



  • Have a degree in a relevant area of science (e.g. environmental fate, environmental chemistry, geography, hydrology, agricultural science, soil science, environmental science, environmental biology, biology, physics, chemistry, maths and engineering) and ideally related work experience. A higher qualification is beneficial but not a requirement.

  • The following skills and a proven track record in delivery of European pesticide fate regulatory risk assessments, would be preferred, although training is provided:

  • Knowledge of the environmental risk assessment requirements and current EU and Global pesticide regulations

  • Knowledge of the environmental fate of organic compounds  

  • An appreciation of the purpose of exposure modelling in risk assessments

  • Fate dossier production

  • Knowledge/conduct of fate studies

  • Experience of  working with fate modelling (eg FOCUS, MACRO etc)
