The Philanthropy Unit is one of the teams within the Communications & Fundraising Department of Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Switzerland. Formed by 15 people, the Philanthropy Unit is in charge of relations with corporate donors, foundations, institutional donors, individual major donors, cantons/municipalities and legacies. 


This Writing Officer will support MSF fundraising efforts with regards to the writing of proposals and reports to our donors, including for institutional donors such as the Swiss Development Cooperation's (SDC) country cooperation offices. The Writing Officer is working closely with the other Writing Officers based in Geneva and Zurich.


 


Your Responsibilities 



  • Writing of funding applications/proposals (including cover letters and thank you letters) for foundations, institutional donors, corporates and individual major donors in English and German or French, based on internal operational documents (such as project documents, mission strategy papers, log frames, budgets, etc.).

  • Writing of interim and final reports (including cover letters) for foundations, institutional donors, corporate and individual major donors in English and German or French, based on internal operational documents (such as activity report, situational reports, quarterly/mid-year report).

  • Together with the Writing Officers in Geneva and Zurich, ongoing coordination and planning of the writing needs according to deadlines. 

  • Translation (into English and German or French).

  • Writing of Insider letters in English and German or French and project updates on ad hoc basis.

  • Proof-reading and editing of writing material created by other team members in English and German or French (incl. thank you letters drafted by the interns) on ad hoc basis.

  • Creating, proof-reading and editing of writing materials in English and German or French from other teams of the department on ad hoc basis. 

  • Controlling the quality of created documents prior to sending.


 


Your Profile


Education



  • University degree in communication, international studies, development studies, translation, journalism, marketing, or similar education



Experience



  • Working experience in fundraising, marketing, communication or journalism. 

  • Proven track record in writing official documents, such as proposals or reports in an NGO context

  • Experience in writing proposals and reports for SDC's local cooperation offices and understanding of humanitarian contexts is a strong advantage.


Technical competencies



  • Proven sense of analysis, strong conceptual and research skills

  • Excellent writing and synthesis skills & good communicator

  • Solid computer skills including MS Office are a must


Languages



  • Proficiency in English

  • Proficiency in either German or French

  • Italian knowledge is an asset

Terms of Employment



  • Fixed-term contract 18 months, 50%

  • Working place: Zürich or Geneva, to be discussed

  • Ideal starting date: October 2021

  • Gross monthly salary (50%): CHF 3'231.- to CHF 3'886.- (salary commensurate with experience and internal salary grid)
