Research Technician / Scientific Associate - Chemistry Process R&D

For our Chemistry Process R&D organization, we are seeking a motivated Research Technician or Scientific Associate.


 


Job Responsibilities


 



  • Carrying out laboratory work ranging from route finding to multi-kilogram syntheses 

  • Optimizing reactions (1-100 g) by scrupulous control of reaction parameters using double-jacketed glass reactors 

  • Proposing alternative reaction conditions and synthesis pathways, and solve scale-up problems

  • Producing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) on kilogram scale (up to 30-liter reactors) to support preclinical development 

  • Monitoring reaction progress and performing compound analysis using TLC, LC/MS, GC/MS, NMR, or online techniques

  • Interpret analytical data and take appropriate action

  • Purify reaction products using standard techniques e.g. column chromatography, prep. HPLC, crystallization, or distillation 

  • Performing general lab duties and maintain a high standard of order and cleanliness 

  • Equipment champion of a dedicated technology or equipment

  • Accurate and regular documentation of experimental work using electronic lab journal 

  • Summarizing the weekly progress

  • Drafting of Mater Operation Records (MOR)

  • Ownership of parts of projects, like proposal of alternative routes for scale-up, or byproduct and impurity identification

  • Present at internal meetings 


 


Candidate’s Requirements


 



  • Apprenticeship as laboratory technician or higher education (BSc, MSc), specialized in organic synthesis (applicants with a PhD will not be considered)

  • Excellent skills in synthetic organic chemistry including asymmetric syntheses, reaction monitoring, work-up, analysis including online monitoring, and isolation techniques 

  • Routine use of modern methods to purify and characterize organic compounds (e.g. column chromatography, automated column chromatography, HPLC, LC-MS, NMR, GC, etc.)

  • 1-5 years of operative experience with scale-up of chemical processes preferred (kilo lab or pilot plant scale)

  • Ability to plan and accurately document practical work

  • Safety first attitude, compliance with process safety best practice

  • Team player with good communication skills and play-to-win attitude

  • Hands-on in the lab with problem-solving skills

  • Flexibility for changing work assignments 

  • Fluent in English, both written and oral, and good knowledge of German
