D-BSSE has 350 international scientists of many disciplines. We focus on research in complex biological systems. Located in Basel, the Department is part of ETH Zurich, a world leading university for research in science and technology. D-BSSE’s mission is supported by its IT Services and Consulting (ITSC) team.
Job description
The core responsibilities will be the support and development of our Linux/Unix infrastructure, server and client systems (RHEL, Ubuntu, Solaris/OpenIndiana) and related software. This includes our deployment, configuration management and monitoring systems (PXE boot, Puppet, Centreon & Nagios).
We operate a local computational Grid, and various servers providing services to our customers (Web servers, databases, file transfer, numerical-processing). ITSC builds its services on its customers’ needs, so client Linux support and customer consulting are also a key part of this role.
Infrastructure support is collaboratively shared within ITSC, so this is also an opportunity to gain or bring wider technical experience, such as physical server maintenance and data-center support, SAN and virtualization support.
We offer an exciting opportunity to support and develop our Linux-based infrastructure and application systems, which underpin our multi-platform customer environment.
Your profile
Your experiences, skills and interests will have good overlap in the areas above, with at least 5 years’ experience. You will need fluency in a common scripting language (Bash, Python or Perl), networking/firewall and server hardware familiarity. Experience in a multiplatform server and client environment are also an advantage. Good communication in English is essential and German is highly desired. Technical course certification (e.g. LPIC, RHCE/RHCSA, ITIL) is also desired. An IT-related background education is an advantage, e.g. an apprenticeship or degree.
