Phd positions in machine-learning schemes for atomic-scale modeling
Inseriert am: 17.06.2021
STI - Two PhD student positions for a fully-funded four-years doctoral program are available at the Laboratory of Computational Science and Modelling at EPFL, starting from Autumn 2021, within the framework of the ERC Consolidator Grant project "FIAMMA".
The project concerns the development and application of physics-inspired machine-learning schemes for atomic-scale modeling, blurring the lines between data- and physics- driven simulations. Planned research involves a combination of conceptual developments, implementation in an open-source software stack, as well as application to challenging and technologically-relevant materials-science problems, including the construction of integrated machine-learning models to study the stability of molecular materials, and the synthesis and characterization of porous silicate frameworks.
The applicant should have a Master or equivalent degree in a related subject, ability to speak and write effectively in English, be creative, independent and a good team player. They should be familiar with the fundamentals of atomistic modelling, working in a Unix/Linux environment and with scientific programming (e.g. C++, FORTRAN or Python). Previous experience with quantum chemistry, electronic-structure calculations and/or machine-learning strategies would be a plus, as well as first-hand knowledge of more general applications of machine-learning and of scientific programming.
EPFL is an international, english-speaking research environment, with a thriving community of researchers working in disciplines related to the subject of this project, and a rich offering of graduate-level courses. It offers attractive employment conditions, with a highly-competitive PhD salary. Candidates are encouraged to also apply to the phd.epfl.ch/EDMX EDMX doctoral school. Admission is a requirement to be enrolled in the program.
The Laboratory of Computational Science and Modeling promotes diversity and equal opportunities in science, and strives to provide an inclusive environment. Applications from women and under-represented groups are welcome.
Applicants are invited to send a one-page cover letter, a full CV including publication list, and contact information of two references to michele.ceriotti@epfl.ch, using "HIRING FIAMMA" as subject line. Evaluation of candidates will start immediately, and continue until the position is filled.
