For our Global Legal function, we are looking for a


Senior Counsel, R&D and Corporate Development


As Senior Counsel for R&D and Corporate Development, you are responsible for providing primary legal support to CSL Behring’s global R&D and Corporate Development functions, with a focus on support for CSL Behring’s R&D sites in Switzerland and Germany. Your expertise in IP/technology licensing and commercialization activities ensures a thorough and strong partnership with the business functions. Your strong collaboration with the wider CSL Behring legal function broadens your support to other parts of CSL Behring’s European and global businesses as required.


These are your responsibilities in detail:



  • Establishing and building optimal working relationships with internal clients based on mutual trust and respect and a comprehensive knowledge of the company's business and its needs and goals

  • Advising internal R&D and Corporate Development clients on a broad range of legal issues related to research and technology licensing activities for the Group's R&D pipeline and to external early stage, on-market and corporate opportunities under consideration (including in-licenses, mergers, acquisitions and divestments)

  • Developing and maintaining a broad and deep knowledge of technology commercialization and the Group's R&D pipeline and Corporate Development initiatives, including products, strategies, and long-term goals, to provide business-focused, highly-actionable advice and enable optimal, risk-intelligent decisions

  • Implementing legal aspects of contract strategy and execution for R&D and Corporate Development and other functions as need be as well as partnering with legal colleagues globally to provide outstanding client service

  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating collaborative research and contract research agreements, material transfer agreements, IP licensing agreements, and and option and technology transfer agreements to support execution and progression of CSL’s R&D projects through development, together with agreements necessary to support the activities undertaken by the Corporate Development function

  • Serving as an escalation point for legal colleagues in relation to agreements that are required by the R&D and Corporate Development functions (including confidentiality agreements and services agreements)

  • Developing and delivering training on legal matters


Who you are:


As a passionate, self-starting partner who drives initiatives and proactively builds-up strong and trustful business relationships, the below competencies contribute to your success:     



  • Master of Laws, PhD and/or relevant bar admission or permission to practice law in-house

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience with an international corporate group or law firm and minimum of 3 years’ of experience in the medical/scientific research, pharmaceutical, biotech or the medical device industry

  • Strong experience in drafting, advising on and negotiating a broad variety of intellectual property commercialization agreements

  • Strong understanding of intellectual property and anti-trust laws

  • Experience with corporate M&A transactions preferred         

  • Results oriented stakeholder management with the ability to work in a cross-functional, cross-cultural matrixed environment

  • Superior oral and written communication skills, fluently in English and ideally in German

  • Regular regional travel and some international travel required
