About Alternative Capital Partners ("ACP")
Swiss Re is a leader in the Alternative Capital markets and has been since the market's inception. We're committed to the development of a market for liquid, transparent and tradable insurance-linked risk products, demonstrating our re/insurance and capital markets experience. Our Alternative Capital Partners ("ACP") group is Swiss Re's centre of expertise that extends our capital structure and handles risk exposure by ceding excess risks to our investors along with taking risks in an alternative format (cat bonds, ILWs etc). ACP sits within Swiss Re Group Finance.
ACP was formed in 2019. The goal of creating this new unit was to bring together our sell-side ILS capabilities with our retrocession needs, allowing us to leverage a broad range of third-party capital to help and partner with us as we grow our natural catastrophe portfolio. By doing so we keep our exposures within our risk limits and improve the diversification of risk retrained on our balance sheet. Historically the team was focused primarily on these risk management needs. As we look to the future, we will begin to strategize on how alternative capital can assist our capital management needs.
The P&C and L&H Retro structuring teams, based in Zurich and London, are responsible for all Retrocession and Underwriting Hedging aspects from a Group perspective. We lead this all the way from setting the strategy to executing of retrocession placements, and we cover structuring, pricing, underwriting, placement and external negotiations within in our teams. When ceding risk in securities form, we work closely with our ILS colleagues. We have two key mandates which involve proactively managing Group Risk Limits and Capital.
On the first, ensuring that the Group remains within its Risk Limits, our activities are focused on the Group's peak exposures (e.g. Nat Cat, extreme mortality etc) and finding efficient and sustainable ways to transfer these exposures to Alternative Capital or to other (re)insurers.
On the second we aim to find efficient sources of (underwriting) capital below the Group's Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) by transferring underwriting risk off the Group Balance Sheet. Peak exposures are also in focus for this second mandate (as they are often important drivers of Group Capital Requirements). However capital optimisation also involves further consideration of longer tail lines of business and risks (such as mortality trend, casualty etc) as these are also important drivers of overall capital requirements (e.g. under the Swiss Solvency Test (SST)).
The role has the following key deliverables
