About the team you are joining


The Products and Services and Business Operations (PSBO) Legal Workstream is part of the office of General Counsel and Corporate Secretary  (GCCS) and is responsible for legal advice on IATA's commercial activities, contracts with suppliers and procurement matters.   The Legal Counsel (LC) is an experienced legal professional responsible for providing legal advice, support, and research on diverse subject areas to support IATA’s business activities, both internally and externally and the work of the PSBO Legal Workstream.  The LC reports to the Deputy General Counsel.


What your day would be like


Provides independent legal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions of considerable complexity, which may include those related to  products and services, administration and management, procurement and contracts, and corporate compliance and human resources at times independently and in some circumstances depending on the subject matter and complexity under the oversight of the DGC or AGC or SLC through the following activities:



  • Prepares legal opinions, memoranda and information papers on questions concerning the interpretation or application of law, legal instruments, or legal principles in relation to IATA’s or airline member activities across multiple jurisdictions;



  • Drafts appropriate responses to correspondence and communication raising legal issues or having legal implications;



  • Drafts and advises on agreements, contracts, instruments, governance documents, and policies in the context of IATA's business activities;



  • Drafts appropriate responses to correspondence and communication raising legal issues or having legal implications;



  • Provides substantive legal advice in commercial negotiations;



  • Responds to requests for legal assistance from clients and receives work assignments from SLCs, AGCs and DGCs;



  • Leads negotiations under the oversight of the SLCs, AGCs of DGCs;



  • Provides support and assistance to senior lawyers including legal research, drafting opinions, and liaising with internal clients and external counsel;



  • Develops training and guidance material for IATA staff on various legal topics;


  • Delivers training to IATA staff;



  • Participates and in some circumstances leads projects within the GCCS Legal Workstreams;
     

  • Collaborates with other team members on the work of the GCCS team;



  • Drafts material on legal subjects for dissemination to airline legal members including case reviews, summaries of legal developments;



  • Instructs external counsel in accordance with GCCS team processes;



  • Communicates with IATA staff across IATA’s business, external counsel, and airline members.


We would love to hear from you if:



  • You have an Advanced University degree in law, (LLB, JD, LLM) from an internationally recognized university;



  • Are admitted to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction, preferably the UK, EU member state, Canada, US, Australia or New Zealand;



  • You have a Minimum five years post qualification experience in an organization, government department or law firm;



  • You have legal professional client relationship skills, excellent command of English, and superior written and oral communication skills;



  • You are an effective, confident communicator and a team player.
