Senior Systems Engineer, Automation & Monotoring 

Our mission:
Within the BIS Information Technology Services department, the Server Engineering ensures that the core IT environment (Windows/Linux server, and core platform) is implemented and operated according to industry standards and is aligned to BIS business strategies and policies.

The Windows Server Engineering team provisions, manages and supports the Windows server environment that hosts a wide variety of business-critical applications used across the Bank. The team supports a number of services used either directly by end users or by other application owners. The team manages and maintains a number of services, including:
•    Windows server deployment, hardening and management within a virtualisation platform.
•    Active Directory and Group Policy
•    SQL Infrastructure services
•    Operational monitoring platforms
•    Working with the security department to develop security standards and monitor the compliance to these standards.
•    Adoption and onboarding of Cloud Services (SaaS, PaaS) and AD federation.
•    Certificate Authority services for internal and external certificates
•    Server software deployment, patching and maintenance
•    Server antivirus software
•    Central Bank communications platforms
•    BIS internal web sites
•    Messaging service platforms, such as e-mail, Blackberry Work and RightFax

Purpose of the role: 
The primary purpose of this role, as a member of Server Engineering, is to provide technical leadership of the automation, monitoring and logging platforms. A key aspect of this role us to support IT infrastructure management in developing and implementing a strategy for the modernisation of the monitoring, logging and automation platforms and support its adoption across the Windows Server Engineering team. This needs to integrated with the overall IT infrastructure monitoring and automation platforms and enable the adoption of modern “as-code” methodologies for cloud adoption and DevOps. Another key component of the role is to support the Windows Server Engineering team as a whole in managing, maintaining and operating the Windows Server environment. 
Primary accountabilities:
•    Maintaining, monitoring and enhancing the Windows Server environment.
•    Contributing towards organisational strategic projects, especially those related to IT Infrastructure automation, logging and monitoring. 
•    Providing second and third-level support to the Windows Server owners to assist with identifying and resolving problems and performance issues. 
•    Working closely with the Customer Service, and Business Relationship Management teams on incident, problem and request management and the integration of these processes with the alerting, monitoring and automation platforms. 
•    Structuring and organizing operational workload and support management with the prioritization of operational tasks.
•    Work according to the BIS implementation of the ITIL processes, in particular change management, configuration management, release management and incident management.
•    Collaboration with the corporate security department to ensure the environment is kept up-to-date, delivered and operated according to security best practises.
•    Supervising the day-to-day activities of the external contractors working within the team.
•    Software asset management of the related software components, ensuring that the obligations are met with respect to software asset management and vulnerability management policies.


Experience and Competencies:
Required Technical Experience
Proven in-depth knowledge and experience with Windows server technologies, Active Directory, Group Policy and the Microsoft Systems Centre environment SCOM and SCCM is required.

Proven in-depth experience with PowerShell, Enterprise Logging platforms, Monitoring and Alerting platforms and DevOps best practises in the context of Windows Infrastructure provisioning and management. 

A broad understanding in the areas of system design, performance benchmarking, implementation, anti-virus, IIS, VMware ESX and file system security (NTFS) is also desirable.

Competencies:
•    Broad understanding of IT best practice and its application in a business environment.
•    Ability to follow change management procedures and processes.
•    Sound understanding of latest trends in technology. 
•    Customer and vendor management.
•    Ability to negotiate effectively
•    Practical experience of participating in IT initiatives, in particular security-driven initiatives.
•    Formal project / program management experience.
•    Excellent customer management skills.
•    Practical presentation and communication skills, able to present points clearly and convincingly.
•    Ability to demonstrate initiative, drive and enthusiasm.
•    Ability to actively work supporting culture change initiatives and tackle cultural barriers.
•    Good overall knowledge of the dependencies and how they interact, e.g. with regard to the technologies involved in core server, networking, database and application technologies.
•    Ability to provide third-level support and design input in an enterprise environment. 
•    Readiness to work outside normal working hours during service windows and to provide on-call cover for evenings and weekend.
•    Ability to apply DevOps practices to organize operations and new capability delivery in a way that meets the Bank’s resilience requirements and innovation agenda.

Qualifications and work experience:
•    Graduate diploma or degree or equivalent in a relevant technical discipline and/or relevant qualification in IT.
•    Microsoft certifications
•    ITIL qualifications
•    At least 5 years’ work experience in a Windows Server engineering role.
