The Autoimmunity, Transplantation and Inflammation (ATI) Disease Area at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Basel is seeking a highly motivated postgraduate to join our Bioinformatics team for an internship in close collaboration with the Chemical Biology & Therapeutics (CBT) and NIBR Informatics (NX) departments.
Our team provides translational bioinformatics expertise and support to clinical and preclinical drug discovery programs targeting autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammation. We integrate and analyze internal and public genomics data to enable strategies for patient stratification, biomarker discovery, target identification and disease understanding.
Your responsibilities:
Your responsibilities will include:
• Benchmark and evaluate existing computational methods and bioinformatics pipelines for the prediction of transcription factor activity and master transcription factor detection from multiple genomics data types (e.g., RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, H3K27ac ChIP-seq);
• Select the best performing method(s) and contribute to their integration into NIBR’s established computational pipelines;
• Apply computational framework to an autoimmune disease setting to demonstrate its utility to uncover disease-relevant transcriptional regulators;
• Present results of your work to an interdisciplinary audience and contribute to a manuscript for publication.

Duration: 6 months
Minimum requirements
• Recent master’s degree (MSc) in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science or a related field;
• Excellent skills in data analysis and visualization using R and/or Python; Experience with Unix command line, shell scripting and pipelining solutions (e.g. SnakeMake);
• Good knowledge of computational and statistical methods for handling high-dimensional omics data; Experience with epigenomics and regulatory genomics data is considered a plus;
• Good understanding of biology and basic epigenetics concepts;
• Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team;
• English: proficient in oral and written.
