Our Principal IP Counsel performs highly complex patent and related activities independently, with a strong focus on litigation and due diligence. You will advise and strategically partner with senior leaders within the business to drive business solutions linked to your expertise. By contributing to the development of operational and strategic objectives within your own area and cross-divisionally, just imagine the impact you can have.



You can look forward to:



• Leading core and complex patent activities in role, managing a global portfolio of litigation and adversarial patent office proceedings, including cases related to patent exclusivity, freedom to operate, infringement by third party innovators, license disputes, and regulatory data protection. Relevant products include biologics and small molecules



• Developing exclusivity strategies for Novartis’ marketed products and compounds in development. Areas of responsibility include litigation, adversarial patent office proceedings, patent term extension strategy, regulatory data protection strategy, and brand maximization



• Managing intellectual property issues relating to a key product, multiple products, or other strategic assets. Areas of responsibility include exclusivity strategies, patent prosecution strategy, contract issues, due diligence, and publication review



• Applying and making strategic use of your deep expertise in national patent law and practice, foreign patent law and practice and other forms of protection relating to exclusivity



• Strategically partnering with the business to create and support the implementation of IP strategies that enable the business. You understand the business at the level of your own Division and at the level of the Novartis Group as part of the healthcare industry, and the role of IP in the business at that level



• Building relationships with, and counseling, senior business partners on complex and high value/impact IP-related matters and representing IP on boards/meetings providing critical IP perspectives



• Contributing to management of the Division budget through the application of cost-containment strategies



• Contributing to, and leading, implementation of Division and cross-divisional patent policies, guidelines and objectives



• Mentoring other individual IP colleagues, including patent practitioners, paralegals, and searchers, and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment free from all forms of discrimination and harassment.




Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:



• Qualified lawyer and/or patent attorney



• Scientific degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry or immunology preferred



• 7 years’ relevant experience as IP attorney/ specialist in a cross-cultural, cross-functional global/regional environment ideally gained within a pharmaceutical/ biotech/ life sciences company and/or in a law firm representing healthcare & technology clients



• Significant international IP legal experience is a must



• Some project management/ leadership



• Business understanding in a highly regulated industry and some exposure to senior management



• Experience in litigation, due diligence, licensing, and freedom to operate analyses.
