In Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) at the NIBR in Basel, Switzerland, we are at the core of Novartis’ purpose. Part of GDC is the Natural Products and Biomolecular Chemistry group which supports and drives activities of drug discovery or development with compounds derived from natural sources, and biomolecules such as enzymes or peptides. This encompasses the identification of new, biologically active natural products from microorganisms to optimization of the producer strains by genetics and physiological strategies in combination with process development in the mid-scale fermentation and isolation plant. We are looking for a highly motivated, passionate researcher with a strong scientific background in molecular biology of natural products pathways, computational biology and bioinformatics. Your responsibilities:



• Work highly collaboratively in a multidisciplinary microbiology/molecular biology team with a special attention to apply and integrate computational biology advances in natural products drug discovery projects

• Collaboration with NIBR Informatics team to evolve NPBC data storage and database management

• Mentor, coach, and develop a dynamic team of scientific associates

• Experiment in a first class laboratory infrastructure, deploy novel technologies and automated solutions, and collaborate with internal and external partners around the world to progress our projects

• Discuss and communicate scientific results at project/group meetings, decision boards, and external conferences

• Contribute to patent inventorship and scientific publications

Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:



• PhD in natural products/ biomolecular sciences with demonstrated expertise in microbial physiology, molecular genetics, and biochemistry

• Well developed bioinformatic experience and strong interest in its expansion and implementation in daily work. A plus would be knowledge in databases

• > 2 years practical experience gained in an industrial or academic research laboratory

• Profound know-how in microbial genetic engineering of natural products clusters in the context of expression and analoging

• A mind-set of curiosity, creativity, collaboration and openness to diverse thinking, with an enthusiasm to develop yourself and others. Ability to critically interpret results, build new experimental hypotheses, and take calculated risks and smart decisions

• Highly collaborative personality and proactive teamplayer within a multinational team, fluent in English (German or French will be beneficial)
