Within Roche’s Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), Neuroscience & Rare Diseases represents a major focus area where we are committed to realizing our long-term vision of changing lives of patients with severe brain disorders. Our preclinical research and early clinical development activities center around large and rare indications within the four major pillars of neurodevelopmental disorders, movement disorders, dementias, and multiple sclerosis. To achieve our goals, Roche pRED Neuroscience & Rare Diseases is currently undergoing a major  recruitment effort for a large number of new positions to develop an effective discovery engine to develop the next generation of transformative therapies.  Among these we are seeking a Discovery Scientist in the area of Gene Therapy within the newly formed Neurotechnologies Section.  All positions are based in Basel, Switzerland.


The Position


We are looking for an independent and innovative scientist committed to using their unique experience to drive exploratory research and drug discovery efforts for neurological and rare disease projects, with a focus on gene therapy technologies. In a highly cross-functional and collaborative environment, you will develop innovative approaches in gene therapy that define the next generation of nervous system treatments for patients with devastating neurologic disorders. 



  • Developing novel ideas to target disease pathogenesis by contributing to and driving new therapeutic target proposals in neuroscience and rare disease areas.


  • Proactive participation in project and cross-functional teams to support projects and platform activities.


  • Supporting and leading cross-functional research projects, championing a strategic research plan, reporting on progress, as well as defining deliverables and deadlines.


  • Building up internal gene therapy capacities by utilizing innovative in vitro screening approaches for develop treatments for CNS indications.


  • Being responsible for the design, analysis and interpretation of experiments.


  • Actively perform and oversee in vitro and/or in vivo experiments to test research hypotheses.


  • Develop and expand your own and your team’s scientific excellence. Continuously grow your understanding of disease biology and technology.


  • Demonstrating scientific excellence in publishing and presenting at scientific meetings.


  • Foster an environment of scientific innovation, curiosity and responsibility through mentoring, coaching and feedback.



Who You Are


You are someone who is deeply driven to change the lives of patients and motivated to take on responsibility for  your own career development. You are an experienced scientist with a PhD in neuroscience, biology or a related life science, a minimum of additional 2 years’ experience in research (industry or academia), and a strong publications record. You are looking for an organization where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies.


You bring:



  • Innovative mind and strong scientific and experimental expert background in neuroscience and gene therapy, high impact scientific contributions to the field. 


  • Extensive experience in at least two of the following areas: neurodevelopmental or neurodegenerative diseases, AAV-based gene therapy, cellular or in vivo model systems with relevance for CNS to screen AAV constructs, design and production of AAVs .


  • Passion, scientific curiosity and commitment to patients.


  • Flexible mindset to work independently on new platform approaches as well as disease related projects, with a structured approach to problem solving and a commitment to generate high quality data packages


  • A highly collaborative spirit that will thrive in a matrix environment.


  • Experience in project leadership is an advantage. 


  • The ability to clearly and concisely communicate to different audiences in and outside the organization.


  • An ability to formulate clear opinions, and perspectives on emerging science and disease biology as well as an open mind to adjust them based on the ongoing scientific progress.


  • Fluent in English, excellent communication and presentation skills are a prerequisite.
