Job Description

Within the fellowship programme, we are looking for a Data Engineer to join CERN.

You will be part of one of the product development teams where you will collaborate with agile team members, share responsibilities, contribute to pair programming and knowledge-sharing sessions, participate in code reviews and agile ceremonies. You will have a chance to work in various aspects of software development. Specifically, you will take on the following responsibilities:

• Designing, developing, and testing data models and extractions (ETL), using Pentaho Data Integration (and other Data Integration tools/techniques), SQL, PL/SQL, R and Python;


•  Interact with (mostly relational) databases using SQL;


•  Extract and visualize data in forms, reports and interactive dashboards;


• Configure and write software to integrate data from standard third-party; provided software solutions run on premise or available in the cloud;


• Maintain, support, and enhance existing (legacy) systems;


• Provide end user support and carry out data migrations and software upgrades.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;


• You have graduated, or are about to graduate, with a university degree (BSc or MSc level in computer science,engineering or another relevant course) and have no more than 4 years’ relevant experience after obtaining your degree;

Essential skills and experience:

• You have experience in working with data warehouses, data integration / ETL tools and Business Intelligence solutions;


• You have experience with relational databases and SQL;


• You have experience with version control systems, particularly, Git;


• You have initial experience with reporting/dashboarding tools and techniques (e.g. Pentaho Report Designer, CTools, Power BI, R, Shiny, Python);


• You are comfortable in working with both new and legacy systems.

Desired technical skills:

Experience using object-oriented programming languages (e.g. Java, C#);

• Experience with web development technologies (e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related frameworks, such as React);


• Experience in working in a lean/agile environment.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

• An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months;


• A stipend ranging from 5,305 to 6,586 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);


• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;


• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;


• 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
