The Institute of Political Science at the University of Bern (Switzerland, Prof. Isabelle Stadelmann-Steffen) has the following vacancy:

From 1 September (or by agreement) for a period of four years (48 months). The position serves the SNSF-funded Sinergia "Sociotechnological Breakthrough of Thermal Energy Storage - a new Approach of Constructive Technology Assessment (SOTES)" under the direction of Prof. Isabelle Stadelmann-Steffen. SOTES is an interdisciplinary project in which political scientists and engineers work together to find ways to overcome the current gap between the availability of technological solutions and their non-diffusion. From the political science side, the project will mainly focus on a panel survey of citizens and different stakeholder groups in order to capture the preferences of these different groups in the field of seasonal energy storage and to incorporate this knowledge into the technology assessment.

Main TasksWithin the project, the postdoc position will mainly be involved in the following tasks:

  • Conceptualization, preparation and coordination of a three-wave panel survey focusing on the social acceptance of and knowledge about seasonal energy storage and related technological solutions in Switzerland.

  • Developing information treatments to be integrated into the survey.

  • Support the PI in supervising the PhD student

  • Production of high-quality research output (e.g., peer reviewed publications, conference presentations)

Requirements

  • Excellent Ph.D. in political science or related field

  • Very good skills in empirical social science methods (esp. survey and experimental analyses)

  • Experience in at least one of the following research areas: Public opinion and political behavior, social acceptance research, energy policy research

  • Very good English skills

  • Motivation for team work, high organizational and communicative skills

  • Knowledge about "the Swiss case" (i.e., the Swiss political system and/or Swiss energy policy) are advantageous but not necessary for the position
