For the Group Thin films and Interfaces we are looking for aPhD StudentAtomic-Scale Transformations in Materials through Electron MicroscopyYour tasks

  • Brainstorm ideas and novel approaches

  • Gain deep understanding of materials science and electrochemistry

  • Work with the state-of-the-art aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy

  • Study the electrocatalytic behavior of materials

  • Collaborate with leading experts in microscopy and X-ray analysis

  • Prepare manuscripts and publish in scientific journals

  • Present your results at major scientific conferences worldwide

  • Be ready to conduct experiments at both the Paul Scherrer Institute and ETH Zurich

Your profileWe are looking for a motivated student who is curious about science and excited to work on challenging but highly rewarding scientific directions. We offer an engaging working environment, outstanding facilities (oxide epitaxy, aberration-corrected electron microscopy, synchrotron and neutron facilities) and a PhD-level education at ETH Zurich. A successful candidate should have a Master’s degree (or being close to its completion) in chemistry, physics, materials science, or related disciplines. We encourage applications from candidates with different and diverse backgrounds. Having a prior experience in one of these fields is a plus (though not necessary): 

  • Inorganic chemistry and/or crystallochemistry/crystallography

  • Physical chemistry

  • Theory and theoretical physics or chemistry

  • Condensed matter physics

  • Electron microscopy

  • Electrochemistry

  • Catalysis

As a candidate, you should be fluent in both spoken and written English and be ready to present your results at major conferences worldwide.
