Mass spectrometry-based metabolomics may uncover novel pathogenic mechanisms of metabolic diseases
and cancers. Innovative cutting-edge technology will permit to perform metabolomics on tissue samples.
Such an approach adds a topological dimension, which has the potential to revolutionize conventional histo-
pathological assessment. Complementary to the clinical metabolomics facility of the Center of Laboratory
Medicine of the University Hospital of Bern, a technology-driven metabolomics platform is to be located in the
Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine (sitem-insel). There, in collaboration with Wa-
ters, metabolomics on tissue samples will be developed for clinical applications.
