OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME


 


Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) is a pro-poor initiative with benefits well beyond health that contribute directly and indirectly to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Control of these diseases has the further advantage of being able to produce visible and measurable results quickly in ways that improve lives, promote economic productivity, and build expertise at the community level. WHO is promoting the intensification of control of neglected tropical diseases through a focus on three main activities: Broader coverage with rapid impact interventions, including in complex emergencies; Use of strengthened vector control to simultaneously reduce the transmission of several diseases; Improved surveillance and quality care in resource limited settings for diseases where this approach brings the best chance of preventing severely disfiguring disease or reducing deaths.


 


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES


 


Provide substantive contribution to the development of appropriate leishmaniasis control strategies, plans, guidelines in the context of the NTD/PTC framework; Provide expert advice, technical assistance and support to endemic countries; In coordination with WHO respective regions, Ministries of Health and Academic Institutions, participate in the initiation, implementation and evaluation of the activities regarding visceral leishmaniasis control.. Contribute to building innovative approaches for integration of interventions into community and primary health care based initiatives including the UHC integrated interventions ; Prepare technical briefings and/or technical documents as required; analyzing national leishmaniasis control plans and surveillance data, update country profiles, support countries in the development and adaptation of their policy guidelines, specific requirements and priorities, as related to the implementation of control of leishmaniasis activities. Provide technical input and support the development of guidelines, manuals, surveillance and other disease specific tools and the initiation and/or strengthening of surveillance, monitoring and evaluation of the programme and validation of programme target achievements; Perform other related duties as required, including participation in and representation of the visceral leishmaniasis control programme at international events, follow up of WHO collaborating centers and monitoring the distribution and access to diagnostic and treatment supplies and services.


 


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


 


Education


Essential: Medical degree with post-graduate degree in public health and/or tropical medicine.
 


Desirable: Training in epidemiology, or tropical diseases control.


 


Experience


Essential: A minimum of seven years of experience in tropical medicine, public health or epidemiology with adequate experience in visceral leishmaniasis elimination programmes; experience at national and international level in leishmaniasis control, preferably in Asia; relevant experience in providing technical assistance to countries and stakeholders. Demonstrated exposure at the international level.
 


Desirable: Demonstrated experience in WHO, another UN Agency to other international organization.


 


Skills


 



  • Thorough knowledge of the epidemiology and control of tropical diseases, preferably leishmaniasis, including planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

  • Thorough knowledge of elimination programmes, preferably on visceral leishmaniasis elimination.

  • Knowledge of general public health and approaches to integrated control of tropical diseases.

  • Proven ability to provide technical advice on tropical diseases control and prevention methods, practices and principles.

REMUNERATION


 


WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 74,913 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5306 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
