Your mission :

At the Defitech Chair of Clinical Neuroengineering directed by Prof. Friedhelm Hummel one post-doc position is available on the development and deployment of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques focused on innovative transcranial electrical and ultrasound-based stimulation methods to determine and modulate human motor behavior and cognition and determine the underlying mechanisms in healthy subjects and neurological patients such as after a stroke, traumatic brain injury or minimal cognitive impairment. Main duties and responsibilities include :

The project will be carried out in a cutting-edge research environment with top-notch neurostimulation equipment and neuroimaging facilities tailored for simultaneous MRI or EEG recordings with brain stimulation.

The project aims at investigating the development and deployment of transcranial electrical and ultrasound-based neuromodulation to modulate not only cortical, but critical subcortical structures within the framework of sensorimotor learning and cognitive processing. The developed techniques will help to determine underlying mechanisms of the evaluated behavior and will pave the way to novel, innovative strategies to modulate deep brain structures in a state-dependent fashion to impact human behavior. Our previous research shows that non-invasive neuromodulation is a promising technology to enhance human behavior and ameliorate functional deficits in neurological patients.

The overarching goal of the project is to develop and apply these technologies to ameliorate sensorimotor and cognitive deficits in neurological patients (such as after stroke, traumatic brain injury or minimal cognitive impairment). Your profile :

The ideal candidate should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, engineering, neuroscience, medicine or physics, hold a PhD in neuroscience and be strongly motivated with a keen interest in human systems neuroscience, neuromodulation and neuroimaging/signal analysis.

A strong background in (non-invasive) brain stimulation methods, master cutting-edge innovative brain stimulation applications and have strong programming and signal analyses skills (Matlab, python, etc.).

Experience in sensorimotor and/or frontal-executive processing is a strong plus.

Comfortable level of French.

The successful applicant will join the EPFL Defitech Chair of Clinical Neuroengineering (Hummel lab), which is led by Prof. Friedhelm Hummel and focuses on the neuroscientific study of sensorimotor learning, cognitive processing and the adaptation and development of neuro-technologies for human application, and the translation into the clinical domain towards neuroprostheses for neurological patients.
