Hitachi ABB power grids, High Voltage Products is renowned worldwide as a specialist in components for power transmission and power distribution. Within the area of High Voltage Products, the Technology Center Switzerland is responsible – as part of a global development organization – for the development and optimization of products like Gas Insulated Switchgear, Generator Circuit Breakers, Surge Arresters, High Voltage Interrupter Chambers, Insulation Components as well as Control and Monitoring solutions. For our Business Unit High Voltage Products in Zurich-Oerlikon, we are looking for Test Engineer to strengthen our team of testing experts. In this challenging role you will be a key contributor to the Research and Development with focus on the testing of high voltage interrupters. In the environment of both R&D and customer projects high power testing is a crucial part for the development and certification of high voltage switchgear. As part of your tasks you will be working together with several internal stakeholders and play a key role for a deep understanding of high voltage interrupters and become a demanded senior engineer for ABB’s global activities in this area. Your responsibilities

• Plan and execute high power and high voltage tests in internal and external laboratories based on international standards in order to maximize the knowledge gain which shall be implemented in our designs


• Specifically including: a. Project Responsibility and accountability regarding testing; b. Defining the test programs; c. Organizing the tests including coordination with laboratories and production sites, measurement techniques, logistics etc.; d. Lead and perform the testing; e. Post-processing of the testing results in close collaboration with the technical expert team; f. Coordinator for all the communications with both internal and external laboratories


• Reporting by means of generation of dedicated technical documentation


• Increase the understanding of testing in the technology development team. Improve the test methods and testing activities seeking for efficacy and efficiency by maintaining a proactive, constructive and fact-based mindset (e.g plan, schedule, booking process, post-processing of testing data, reporting processes)


• Encourage team and colleagues to be aware of health and safety


• Support management decisions with your expertise and work together with our technology and product management


• Contribute and support our global R&D activities related to High Voltage/High Current switchgear and Generator Circuit Breakers in cooperation with Hitachi ABB engineers and technical experts for full customer satisfaction

Your background

• Master’s degree in electrical, high voltage engineering or a closely related subject from a Polytechnical/Technical University or from a University of Applied Sciences


• First experience in research and development of power equipment, ideally high voltage switchgears is an asset


• Knowledge in medium/high voltage, high power testing and electrical circuits is an asset


• Excellent communication / collaboration skills across all levels of the organization


• Basic CAD knowledge


• Experience with post-processing software: Diadem, Python and Excel or similar tools


• Genuine enthusiasm for research and development in an interdisciplinary, application-oriented field


• Practical way of working, hands-on, self-oriented / proactive, committed, willing to learn and flexible


• Knowledge in ATP or EMTP or similar is a plus


• Programming skills are a plus (e.g. Modelica)


• Willing to travel up to 30% of the working time (after the pandemic)
