MS expert / Scientist (80%-100%) (m/f/d)


The Biochemistry Group of Research Bern is currently seeking to hire a mass spectrometry (MS) expert to join our team on the Insel Campus.


This is a great opportunity to apply a strong technical background in LC-MS to exciting interdisciplinary projects while working in a collaborative team environment on state-of-the-art instrumentation. The successful candidate will partner with other Research Scientists to develop innovative methodologies and to provide technical support and training to enable targeted protein quantification in a wide variety of samples from research to pre-clinical and clinical studies.


In this position, extensive knowledge of mass spectrometric approaches is required to support the integration of new technologies into the existing processes for the accomplishment of short- and long-term projects. Scientific enthusiasm, creativity, hands-on MS experience and commitment will be essential for the successful achievement of team and organizational goals and timelines.


Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities:



  • Design, development, execution, and analysis of LC-MS based targeted protein quantification workflows (SRM, MRM, MRM3) in a wide variety of different matrices.

  • Verification and validation of assays for targeted protein quantification.

  • Main responsible for MS instrumentation operation, troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Responsible for supervising MS Facility junior collaborators in performing MS related analytical tasks.

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for MS related topics to provide scientific input to multiple projects and technical teams.

  • Author lab procedures, protocols, reports and SOPs for internal / external partners; present at internal and external seminars and conferences.

  • Collaborate with group members and cross-functional teams to support pre-clinical and clinical studies; ensure close collaboration with other local and global CSL functions and across the global CSL MS network.


Qualifications & Experience:



  • Ph.D. in biological sciences, biophysics, or analytical chemistry with at least one year of biopharmaceutical industry / PostDoc experience in the field of MS-based quantification.

  • Proven track record in the development of MS methodologies for qualitative and quantitative characterization of molecules. Good understanding of method verification and validation processes for targeted quantification is required.

  • Hands-on experience with standard MS sample preparation protocols for targeted quantification workflows (experience using high-throughput automation platforms is desirable).

  • Hands-on experience with MS data analysis software (e.g. SCIEX software package).

  • Hands-on experience and knowledge in the operation and maintenance of different types of mass spectrometers, preferentially QTRAP and Orbitrap mass spectrometers.

  • Good understanding of scientific process, including hypothesis development and experimental design (DoE) with ability to capture and record complex scientific data accurately and reliably.

  • Proficient English verbal and written communication skills with ability to work independently and in a team environment.
