Project Manager Simulation Design and Metrics Development CTAP


The AO Competency-based Training and Assessment Program, also referred to as CTAP, uses validated knowledge and skills training and assessment tools to address gaps in surgical training and establish AO as a leader in skills training and assessor of competence. CTAP takes advantage of new practices in training, coaching and assessment emerging through the rapid development in AR/VR simulation.


The purpose of the role of the Project Manager Simulation Design and Metrics Development for CTAP is to collaborate with subject matter experts and AO's industrial simulation partners to design VR and combined VR/AR simulations for skills training and assessment in the CTAP modules. This role will be responsible for procedure characterization and the development of metrics and performance feedback options.  This role will also support the development of Statements of Work for each simulation in collaboration with AO's industrial simulation partners, the author teams, the CTAP Project Manager and AO's legal department.


 The Project Manager Simulation Design and Metrics Development coordinates the review, testing and feedback by subject matter experts during simulation development. This role supports the CTAP research team in the validation of the simulation platforms and in establishing proficiency benchmarks for all simulations. The Project Manager Simulation Design and Metrics Development has a global scope and is based in AONA Philadelphia (US))


 In this role you will be required to



  • Design of VR and VR/AR simulations and development of metrics for a larger number of surgical procedures as defined and prioritized by the CTAP taskforce

  • Cognitive task analysis: Apply a structured process to identify and define procedural steps, deviations from optimal performance and sentinel errors in collaboration with subject matter experts.

  • Applying AO education principles in the design of optimal formative feedback mechanisms for trainees on their performance

  • Support the CTAP Project Manager in the development, review and approval of Statement of Works for each simulation on AO side

  • Organize and coordinate review, testing and feedback by subject matter experts during simulation development. Support the CTAP Project Manager in managing the final approval process

  • Support the CTAP research team and external research specialists in the collection and analysis of user data to identify additional relevant metrics for performance at a proficiency level


To master this challenge, you have



  • Master degree in (Medical) Education or equivalent

  • Experience in cognitive task analysis and the development of metrics for VR simulations with/without haptic feedback for skills training

  • Track record in the management of educational projects

  • English native speaker or business fluent

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Willingness to travel

  • Experience with non-profit organizations

  • Medical background preferable
