Are you an experienced Linux system administrator that has spent most of your career in integrating and operating opensource technologies? Do you have good experience in providing production level services and do you strive to optimize, automate and constantly improve the operational quality of your services? Have you suffered enough from having to operate unfinished solutions and wished to have the time and resources to ‘do things right’? Do you enjoy gathering a profound understanding of the technologies that you use and operate, and have a strong focus on the security aspect of those technologies? Do you want to get a formal further education in IT security?


Scientific IT Services of ETH Zurich is operating the Leonhard Med research data platform. Leonhard Med has been created to allow secure management and analysis of sensitive human research data and offers its services to researchers at ETH and Switzerland. To strengthen our team of experts for further developing and operating Leonhard Med and its services, SIS is looking for an IT Security Engineer.


Job description



  • System hardening and further measures to improve system security.

    • Gain understanding of the technology stack from a security viewpoint.



    • Monitor and analyze security-related events on the hardware, software and network level, and handle security incidents.

    • Actively collaborate with IT security specialists from the ETH IT Security Center as well as from the BioMedIT network.

      • Actively contribute to security reviews and penetration tests of BioMedIT infrastructures.

      • Participate in technical working groups to further develop common security guidelines.

      • Support the operation team to establish a culture of secure IT operation and engineering.


    • Maintain active knowledge of current threats and best practices in IT security as well as conduct internal integrated security reviews.

    • Maintain internal documentation on our IT system security and participate in security audits.

    Your profile

    This position requires:



    • A degree in computer science or a comparable field of study or professional training in IT.

    • Proven experience with Linux systems administration, preferably in a research environment.

    • Good understanding of Linux security-related services (firewall and SSH, authentication incl. 2FA, key management, VPNs, mandatory access control, logging, monitoring, auditing, etc).

    • Beside solid technical abilities, this position also requires an aptitude for finding good solutions to complex IT problems, together with a ‘focus on the finished product’ mindset.

    • Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other IT specialists are necessary.

      • English is required, German is an asset.


    Prior experience with IT security in cloud environments (in particular Kubernetes) is a plus.
