Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.Empa’s Laboratory Materials for Energy Conversion focuses on materials and device innovation for sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies. We are offering aPostdoc position on cathode/electrolyte interface in lithium-ion batteries

The research project focuses on developing an understanding of phenomena at the interface between layered transition metal oxide cathode materials and liquid electrolytes at high voltages. Your tasks include liquid electrolyte formulation, cell assembly and characterization with a special focus on the cathode/electrolyte interface. Our labs are fully equipped for battery fabrication and testing. State-of-the-art facilities include synthesis labs with fume hoods, numerous gloveboxes, various synthesis reactors and furnaces, sputtering, evaporation, and atomic layer deposition facilities, X-ray diffractometers, Raman and FTIR spectrometers, electrochemical characterization including impedance spectroscopy, mass spectrometers, gas chromatographers, thermogravimetric analyzer, various equipment for the characterization of electrolytes, etc. Access to advanced electron microscopy and X-ray facilities is also available.

We are looking for a highly self-motivated team player ready to work independently in Empa’s vibrant international research environment. The ideal candidate possesses a PhD degree in materials science, chemistry, physics, or related fields and prior experience in the characterization of cathode/electrolyte interfaces using e.g. operando Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and/or operando mass spectrometry. In your application include your CV and publication list, a one-page motivation letter why you want to work on this topic and specifying your expertise in interface characterization, and at least two reference letters. Only complete applications will be considered.
