The Immunobiology group of Prof. Christoph Hess (biomedizin.unibas.ch/en/research/research-groups/hess-lab/ ) studies the link between metabolism and immunity. Our team consists of immunologists, cell and molecular biologists, microbiologists, and biochemists that work together to understand how changes in host and cellular metabolism impact B and T cells effector maturation and function. We are part of the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel. The expected start date is April-May 2021.


Your position



  • Organize and manage shared laboratory responsibilities

  • Ordering and receiving laboratory supplies

  • Develop system for tracking and maintaining consumable reagents and supplies.

  • Coordinate equipment maintenance and repair

  • Oversee compliance with biosafety guidelines and regulations

  • Train new lab members on basic cell culture and laboratory techniques

  • Isolation, culture, and maintenance of primary human B and T cells and cell lines

  • Designing and generating plasmids and viral vectors to deliver recombinant proteins using different expression systems

  • Perform cellular, biochemical, and immunologic assays to characterize engineered T cells

  • Conjugating antibodies and staining cells for CYTOF

  • Analyse and present data in lab progress reports


Your profile



  • Bachelor/MS degree in Biology or related discipline.

  • >5 years-experience working in a research laboratory

  • Extensive background in Cell and Molecular Biology techniques (cell culture, microscopy, recombinant vector construction, transfections and lentiviral transductions, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, and biochemical assays such as immunoblots etc.)

  • Knowledge in immunology techniques (flow cytometry, ELISA, PBMC isolation) is a plus

  • Must be a pro-active problem solver

  • Excellent communicator with developed interpersonal and presentation skills

  • Capable of working independently and in a collaborative setting

  • Adept with computers. Proficiency in various research laboratory software (e.g. Fiji, cell profiler, Graphpad, FlowJo) is a plus.

  • Fluent in English (verbal and written). Good command of German or French is a plus.

  • Due to work permit issues, a current resident of Switzerland or a legal resident of EU countries is preferred.
