As the Director of Sustainability Policy you will support the delivery of AstraZeneca’s sustainability strategy through targeted policy change and government engagement, leveraging platforms globally and working closely with selected markets. This role integrates activities across AstraZeneca related to sustainability into one consistent and compelling government affairs and policy strategy. Priority areas of focus are (1) environmental sustainability / ‘Ambition Zero Carbon’ (2) sustainable access to medicines and healthcare (3) sustainable & innovative health financing.


This role supports our ambition to further strengthen our global leadership in the external environment.


In this position, you will provide thought leadership to AstraZeneca, direct internal resources and engage externally to promote a policy environment which will enable healthcare systems and AstraZeneca to succeed in:



  • anticipating and managing the risks and opportunities posed by the transition to a low carbon economy


  • developing and support executing an effective strategy that expands patient’s access to healthcare and innovative medicines, e.g. via commercial models, inclusive business models and philanthrophic access initiatives


  • creating financing solutions and shaping financial incentives for health technologies which contribute to the decarbonization of health systems or the strengthening of health system sustainability and resilience, related to AstraZeneca priority disease areas and assets.




You will work across AstraZeneca’s Government Affairs and Policy organization, the Corporate Sustainability group and other global functions. You will be the key counselor to AstraZeneca country offices (marketing company presidents and Government Affairs heads) and assist in developing and executing their sustainability plans, partnering with external stakeholders as appropriate.


As the Director of Sustainability Policy for AstraZeneca, you understand that to be successful in this role you will develop strong, trusted partnerships with a variety of external stakeholders. You have a profound knowledge in the field of environmental sustainability, access to medicines and in how health systems operate. You have a special gift and motivation to find solutions which benefit multiple stakeholders. You are as passionate as we are about our work, you come equipped with an infectious energy, an entrepreneurial mindset and proven ability to move matters through collaboration.


Typical Accountabilities:



  • Integrate AstraZeneca activities into one consistent and compelling government engagement approach with focus on priority markets for our sustainability ambition (approx. 50%). Examples:



    • integrate corporate carbon zero strategy to anticipate and manage the risks and opportunities posed by the transition to a low carbon economy


    • support the overall access to medicines strategy, integrating currently diverse corporate, BBU and OBU approaches for more impact and government support



  • Leverage global platforms (WEF, EXPO, etc) and other opportunities to position AZ sustainability agenda and buy in from Governments and key stakeholders (approx. 25%). Examples:



    • support implementation of HRH sustainable markets initiatives to drive AZ leadership


    • ensure aligned government agendas for key global platforms such as UN General Assembly





  • Create and execute a progressive policy strategy aimed at anticipating and delivering tangible business benefits for sustainability activities / outcomes for AZ (25% focus). Examples:



    • Create regulatory and other incentives for medicines and devices which reduce health system CO2e


    • Create a strategic approach to finance AstraZeneca market shaping initiatives





  • Contribute to the external engagement plan for senior leadership (e.g. CEO, Chairman, EVP Sustainability, Region heads, Marketing country presidents)


  • Develop compelling policy argumentations, engagement materials and trainings


  • Create strong external relationships and partnerships with relevant stakeholders such as policy-makers/advisors, topic experts and professional societies, patient advocacy groups, clinical experts, etc.


  • Lead and contribute to multi-stakeholder partnerships with the aim to deliver outputs relevant to progressing policy discussions at Region and country level (e.g. policy evidence generation, political engagement).



To be successful in this role you will require the following:
