Thoratec Switzerland GmbH is an Affiliate of Abbott and takes care of the development and manufacturing of our mechanical circulatory support devices, that are designed to support a broad range of advanced heart failure patients. To complete our team in Zürich, we are looking for a:


Manager Procurement


The successful candidate will be responsible for setting and executing procurement strategies as well as for managing the daily operational activities of the purchasing department in order to achieve high quality results that support the objectives of the business. You’ll be responsible for the procurement of all goods and services required for our manufacturing and R&D site, located in the heart of Zurich. You’ll closely collaborate and maintain excellent relations the global supply chain, and global supplier assurance team and align best practices as well as procurement strategies. You’ll provide effective leadership and coaching to the procurement team members in order to achieve best performance and results. In order to ensure good and trustful relations with our key suppliers, you’ll engage directly in the front-line relationship management. In this challenging and highly cross-functional role, you’ll report into the plants head of operations.


Key responsibilities and activities



  • Implements sourcing strategies to support objectives in the area of indirect or direct commodities, providing the entity a competitive advantage in the areas of materials, supplies

  • Ensure procurement best practices are applied, continuous optimization of processes, methods, performance measurements, use of digitalization and automatization.

  • Provides effective leadership and coaching to the procurement team members to achieve best performance and results.

  • Supports NPD to assure best partners from a technical but also from a commercial standpoint are selected and commercial contracts are in place

  • Locates, analyzes and develops a consolidated supplier base to meet current and future needs.

  • Negotiates and manages contracts/agreements for assigned commodities with low to medium risk and low to medium complexity.

  • Develops risk management strategies and recommends short and long terms strategies with defined risk/benefit strategies.  Develops alternate sources to ensure a steady flow of goods, materials, and/or services.

  • Maintains budget and performs analyses of costs related to labor rates, charges, time, and cost of materials.

  • Monitors supplier capability and performance to ensure maintenance of deliver, quality and price commitments.

  • Maintains and promotes sound relationships with suppliers and business community.

  • Supports projects to assure all procurement activities are performed as required.

  • Creates and maintains mutually beneficial long-term partnerships with suppliers to foster feedback and continuous improvement. This includes driving continuous improvements with the supplier base.

  • Understands, tracks and forecasts the key cost drivers and market factors for assigned commodities.

  • Compiles market condition information regarding commodities and suppliers and suggests/implements business strategy changes.

  • Complies with ISO 13485 and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. 


Your profile and experience



  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Business Administration, an Engineering discipline or Supply Chain / Operations

  • Further certification (CPM, CPSM), Supply Chain education (MAS/MBA) and leadership (CAS/DAS) desired

  • More than 5 years of international supply chain experience with negotiation and contract management

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role, leading a team

  • Familiarity with a highly regulated industry and knowledge of medical standards would be a plus

  • Experience with cross-functional and multi-site corporate communication and collaboration

  • Hands-on manager, very strong execution skills with the ability to get things done

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt it to all levels

  • Proficient in German and English

  • Advanced SAP and office user

  • Analytical, Structured and cost-conscious approach

  • Open to different cultures
