Mechanical & System Engineering Position

Your mission :

The EPFL Space Centre (eSpace) is dedicated to promoting excellence in space research, education and innovation. Our young and dynamic team boasts a profound technical expertise. The internal skill set includes system engineering, mission design, multidisciplinary project management, astrophysics and actuator development.



Our current research focus is on three main areas; Removal of Space Debris, Sustainable Space Logistics, Relative Navigation, Robotics, and Space Situational Awareness.



Furthermore, as part of our educational mandate, eSpace support the following EPFL student associations and projects that comes with their challenges and hands-on experiences:



EPFL Rocket Team: focusing on launching rockets and propulsion

EPFL Spacecraft Team: focusing on deploying a constellation of Cubesats

GrowBotHub: focusing on developing automated harvest in space

Asclepios: focusing on developing Moon analog missions

Space @ Your Service: focusing on the communication and outreach of space sciences



We are looking for a system engineer willing to join our team and face multiple challenges.

Main duties and responsibilities include :



  • Participate in the development and validation of a flatsat performed by eSpace for the Clearspace-1 Project (Space debris removal) (80%)

  • Follow the technical developments and provide system engineering supervision for the EPFL Spacecraft Team

  • Participate in mission and system analyses for the sustainable space logistics initiative

  • Foster the development of eSpace

The engineer will also have the opportunity of supporting other aspects of eSpace, either from an engineering perspective or from a business and production perspective. Your profile :



  • You have a Master of Science in Engineering, Physics, Robotics, Production Engineering or Aerospace

  • You have worked on a student cubesat mission up to phase D (System engineering, AIV, student supervision)

  • You have a background in software engineering

  • You speak fluently English

Optional



  • You have experience in proposal writing and raising funding from various sources

  • You have experience dealing with industrial customers

  • You have a good knowledge of French.

The engineer will work with industry partners, EPFL collaborators and laboratories and students. He/She should be enthusiastic and curious about space activities in general, should not be afraid of taking initiatives, self-motivated and autonomous, and willing to promote (as needed) eSpace’s activities.
