As a Data Scientist, you will join the core data science team that powers marketplace design and yield management for Expedia Group (Expedia, Hotels.com, VRBO, Travelocity, Orbitz, Wotif and others). Our mission spans many areas that are core to our business, including search and sort, pricing, revenue management and geography. Your work will impact millions of our customers and will have a direct impact on our business results.


We are looking for highly capable profiles to utilize machine learning, advanced analytical and statistical techniques to frame challenging business problems into sophisticated data-driven solutions. This is an applied research role – your models will be deployed to our production systems and your results will be measured objectively via A|B testing.

What you’ll do:



  • You will apply solid scientific skills, strong analytical and innovative thinking to quickly learn new domains and turn innovative ideas into working solutions


  • You will build end-to-end design of one step models based on detailed understanding of business requirements, including approach, choice of algorithm and data sources.


  • You will seek relevant academic papers and experience to point out strengths and weaknesses of current models and recommends more sophisticated designs when needed


  • You will manipulate large data sets to build the next Expedia ML/AI capabilities


  • You will collaborate with business owners and engineers / developers to design and deploy complete solutions that comprise model building, runtime scoring and performance monitoring


  • You will communicate a compelling rationale and narrative to peers and partners.


  • You will evaluate and document models trough sophisticated experimentations such as backtesting and A|B test


  • You will write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular in a way that enables efficient and accurate translation into a data pipeline.



Who you are:



  • PhD or MS in computer science or equivalent quantitative fields with background in both machine and software development.


  • 3+ years industry experience and hands on experience building machine learning models.


  • Have significant experience in at least one major ML programming language (Python, Scala…) and familiar with others.


  • Experience with distributed computing (Hadoop/Spark)


  • Hands-on experience with deep learning technologies are a plus


  • Passion for solving exciting and meaningful real-world problems using principled techniques and practices


  • 2+ years’ experience of working with live data (data cleaning, data visualization and modeling)


  • Collaborates well in a team and sensitive to clients' needs, while developing warm relationships


  • Experience with documenting, synthesizing, and communicating results.


  • Willingness to think through ambiguous problems with others
