The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2100 people. For our research on the behaviour of radionuclides in liquid metals in the Laboratory of Radiochemistry we are looking for aPostdoctoral FellowRadionuclide release from liquid metalsYour tasksIn the frame of an international project, we study the evaporation of radionuclides dissolved in liquid metal coolants to be used in advanced nuclear reactor systems. Within this scope, your tasks will be:

  • Preparation of homogeneous lead and lead-bismuth eutectic samples containing radioactive dopants of different elements

  • Studying the evaporation of the dopants from the molten metal and their deposition from the gas phase by transpiration and thermochromatography experiments under variation of chemical conditions (dopant concentration, gas phase composition)

  • Publish and present results in journals and at international conferences

  • Supervision of young scientists on the Doctoral and Master levels

Your profileYou are a highly motivated candidate who enjoys working experimentally in an interdisciplinary environment. A PhD degree in Chemistry, Material Sciences or Metallurgy with a focus on Inorganic and Physical Chemistry is required. Good experimental and technical skills are mandatory for the execution of the experimental program. You should be a team player and have good command of the English language. Scientific writing skills are particularly important. Experience in preparation and handling of liquid intermetallic samples and radioactive substances as well as knowledge in gas phase chemistry and radiochemistry are strong assets. Communication skills in German are also advantageous. We offerOur institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
