Our five departments pursue cutting-edge teaching and research in the fields of design, film, fine arts, music, dance, theatre, transdisciplinary studies, and art and design education.


The Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology (ICST) is the largest research institute at ZHdK. Part of the Music Department, it is active in research, education and musical creation. Besides the long-standing focus on three-dimensional sound projection, current research fields include interfaces and augmented instruments, network-based composition and performance systems, interactive movement and music, musical notation and representation, immersive and virtual environments, electroacoustic performance practice, sonification and acoustic ecology. The promotion of musical creation through residencies and the involvement of artists in research projects are among ICST’s main concerns.

Computer music represents a specific approach within electroacoustic music practice today. Embedded in a research practice at the interface between art and science from its very beginnings, computer music relies on profound musical knowledge and the mastery of formal languages such as programming languages and mathematics in order to create and represent musical structures, processes and systems.



The professorship "Contemporary Computer Music Practice" offers the opportunity to further develop computer music in the context of contemporary digital arts. The position calls for hard skills in the field of computer music, genuinely musical thinking firmly rooted in contemporary and experimental music practice, and a strong commitment to research in the arts.



The position combines research and teaching as related to artistic practice with the following respective aims:



  • To conceive and conduct research into computer music practice that integrates with the research landscape at ICST.

  • To contribute to the improvement of practical skills of students (Electroacoustic Composition, Sound Design and Tonmeister) at different levels (BA, MA, Dr. artium, PhD) and to the development of an academic approach in which artistic practice and research within the interdisciplinary context of ZHdK are combined.

Innovative research approaches in one or more core areas of music technology and broad knowledge of relevant topics (audio signal processing, spatial audio/virtual acoustics, human-computer musical interaction) are required. High-level programming skills and profound knowledge of music theory, acoustics and psychoacoustics are a prerequisite.

The expected profile is that of a senior researcher (PhD or Dr. artium) with international experience in leading research groups and in the acquisition of externally funded projects, didactic qualification and teaching experience at university level as well as artistic experience in contemporary and experimental music.
