The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. About 850 people from more than 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.

Our Swiss Centre for International Health (SCIH) conducts consultancy, project management, training and applied research work in international and global health. SCIH is now seeking applications for the following new position based in Basel:


IT Consultant (80-100%) with expertise in open source solutions and/or health information systems


Within our digital health portfolio, we emphasise health technology management, health information systems and telemedicine applications. Our work is integrated in a multidisciplinary team with the overall aim to strengthen health systems in international settings. We aim at identifying a candidate with a strong interest and proven experience on health information systems and public health, especially in low and middle income countries (LMICs).

The successful candidate is expected to contribute as follows:



  • Interact with regional and international groups on digital health and public health informatics

  • Cooperate with partners at different levels (ministries, software development teams, etc.) to undertake product promotion activities

  • Undertake feasibility studies for implementing software solutions

  • Elaborate requirements and establish technical documentation

  • Implement software solution (deployment, configuration and training)

  • Further consolidate and develop our expertise in health information systems in LMICs

  • Support development of communication products for software solutions

  • Offer technical troubleshooting support and act as interface between system users and development team

  • Manage open source tools to support product releases (source code, documentation updates, training material etc.)

  • Deal with external IT vendors (contract management, coordination of software development cycle, etc.)

To best fit into our active, interdisciplinary team, we ask for the following requirements:



  • Master or higher level in Engineering, IT, Information Systems or related subjects; a postgraduate level is an asset

  • At least 4 years hands on software development or implementation experience, including open source solutions

  • At least 2 years experience in client interfacing role and experience of different roles involved in the software development lifecycle

  • Knowledge of open source tools and new technological trends and digital health ideally demonstrated through work experience of at least 2 years with open source technologies

  • Proactive learner of new tools (GitHub, Jira, Confluence, etc.), technologies (python, java, SQL server, etc.) and trends

  • Excellent command of English; French and German is an asset, but not a requirement

  • Furthermore we expect a high level of commitment and flexibility, good communication skills, strong spirit of team work, capacity to take initiative and ability to work with professionals in multi-cultural contexts
