Abbott Established Pharmaceutical (EPD) is looking for an


Senior Patent Counsel - Emerging Markets


to be based in the global Division Headquarter in Basel-Switzerland.


In this Regional Patent Counsel Role you coach & manage a team of patent attorneys, lead all patent and related activities for a business unit within Abbott‘s Established Pharmaceuticals Division.


You serve as a strategic partner to leaders within the business advising on patent-related strategies for pharmaceutical product development, in-licensing, and/or launch.


You contribute to the development of the operational and strategic objectives of the Abbott Established Pharmaceuticals patent team


Core Job Responsibilities:



  • Coaches & manages a team of 3 patent attorneys based within the Markets

  • Personally, handles product responsibilities and oversees core and complex patent activities in the team;
    e.g. freedom to operate analysis, product & launch strategies, patent due diligence's for in-licensed pharmaceutical products, IP contract terms, patentability analysis, patent drafting and prosecution

  • Applies deep expertise in national patent law and practice and superior working knowledge of emerging markets patent law and practice

  • Applies deep knowledge of patent and other exclusivities in strategically supporting generic & differentiated generics product development and launches

  •  Advises business partners, including senior management, fosters strong working relationships with internal clients and provides sound, practical, and responsive support 

  • The candidate should be able to anticipate, identify, and manage risk effectively to resolve a variety of complex issues relating to patents, patent licensing, pharmaceutical development, regulatory matters

  • Has direct budget responsibility and develops and manages budgets for assigned legal matters

  • Advises Division Counsel of critical project developments/matters in a timely manner


Minimum Experience/Training Required:



  • European Patent Attorney (EQE) and/or equivalent national or regional patent qualification OR admission to practice as an attorney-at-law (e.g., lawyer or solicitor) in one or more national or state jurisdictions

  • Excellent English skills, bilingual preferred e.g. Spanish or Russian or Chinese

  • 8 + years’ experience in patent law

  • Possess in-depth pharmaceutical industry knowledge, including licensing, acquisitions, and pharmaceutical research and development

  • Experience of project leadership; working in cross-functional teams, and advising the business on generic/differentiated generic product development and launches

  • Experience of working within a matrix organization, management interaction, healthcare industry/environment;

  • Experience working with the emerging markets (APAC, China, etc.) strongly preferred

  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and articulate recommendations and options clearly and concisely to a variety of business partners

  •  Ability to work in a diverse & international team, team player
