Job description
Evolva is seeking a motivated Fermentation Scientist for our Reinach fermentation laboratory.
The primary responsibility of this position will be to characterize newly developed strains as well
as developing fermentation processes.
This position will require a self-starting, results-oriented person, who will thrive in a fast-paced
environment where priorities shift regularly. The multi-disciplinary nature of the fermentation unit
requires frequent interactions with scientists in the strain engineering, downstream and analytical
teams. You will have the responsibility of providing technical and critical fermentation support to
the teams in a fast and efficient manner.
As fermentation work may require some off-hour work, flexibility and the ability to adjust to a
rolling sampling schedule that may include weekends is an advantage.

Your responsibilities include:
– Designing and execution of fermentation related experimental plans in support of physiological
characterisation of metabolically engineered microbial strains as well as bioprocess
development within a cross-functional team structure
– Design and optimization of fermentation processes suited for industrial scale-up
– Development of fermentation processes using scale-down models to predict process
performance at manufacturing scale
– Contribution to project plans, timelines and technical scope of existing and new projects
– Documentation of experimental data, preparation of technical reports, communication of
findings to relevant stakeholders
– Conduct review of literature, making recommendations for application to current processes
– Required to join a rolling sampling schedule that involves work on some weekends

Minimum requirements
As an ideal candidate you will bring following experiences and qualifications to the role:

  • M.Sc. or higher academic degree in Chemical engineering, Biotechnology or Biology with
emphasis on microbial fermentation and bioprocessing

  • Holding a Ph.D. focused on a microbial fermentation or bioprocessing related topic would be
    advantageous

  • Solid experience in microbial fermentation, including batch, fed-batch and continuous
cultivation using both yeast and bacteria, as well as microbial physiology

  • Experience in industry, ideally including interaction with industrial/commercial partners is an
    advantage

  • Knowledge of microbiology, DNA technologies, metabolic engineering, biochemistry, flux-
analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE) and screening techniques is an advantage

  • Good communicative skills and an outgoing personality. Fluent in English (orally and in
    writing)

The ideal candidate is willing to take ownership and go the extra mile, able to work under
pressure and has a team-oriented personality. You are conscientious, considerate, and believe
in innovation that benefits consumers, partners, and the planet. You want to play a role in the
commercial success of our novel products.
