APPLICATION SPECIALIST for volume electron microscopy in the Friedrich lab

Inseriert am: 31.12.2020

The Friedrich group at FMI is seeking a scientist to support electron microscopy projects in neuroscience with the goal to reconstruct ensembles of connected neurons. Research in our group focuses on neuronal computations underlying higher brain functions and uses zebrafish as a model system (www.fmi.ch/friedrich.r/). We have established a sample preparation and imaging pipeline for serial block face scanning electron microscopy (SBEM), a technique to acquire large stacks of electron microscopy images from biological tissue.

The scientist will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of scanning electron microscopes with custom modifications, supervise the acquisition of large volumetric image datasets, and contribute to image analysis workflows. She/he will be part of a small team: on one side she/he will interact with the EM unit of FMI’s imaging platform for sample preparation and routine instrument maintenance; on the other side, she/he will work in close collaboration with scientists interested in the reconstruction of neuronal circuits. Experience in electron microscopy and a background in engineering, physics, neurobiology or a related discipline is expected.

The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) is a basic research institute affiliated with the University of Basel and the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. Research at FMI focuses on fundamental questions in multiple areas including quantitative biology, epigenetics and neuroscience. Learn more: www.fmi.ch.
