The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2100 people.

For the Electrochemistry Laboratory we are looking for aPhD StudentElectrochemical reduction of CO2 in devices with bipolar membranesYour tasksThe research of our group focuses on the characterization of porous materials and optimization of their transport properties in electrochemical energy conversion devices. Chemicals and fuels based on non-fossile CO2 are an important path for decarbonizing industry and the energy system. In the present project we collaborate with EPFL in a combined experimental and modeling project for efficient electrochemical reduction of CO2. In your PhD thesis you prepare and characterize materials using different electrochemical methods for CO2 reduction, collaborate on advanced X-Ray imaging and publish results in well regarded journals.Your profileOur research is carried out between chemistry and engineering. Thus, a profound knowledge of chemistry or knowledge in chemical/mechanical engineering with a MSc degree is required. Furthermore, technical skills and the joy of experimental laboratory work should be part of your abilities. The evaluation of research results is considerably simplified by the ability in programming. A broad interest in energy and/or hydrogen technology is of advantage as is the very good command of the English language. We offerOur institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
