The Center for Fish and Wildlife Health, Department for Infectious Diseases and Pathobiology, Vetsuisse Faculty, offers this position from April 1, 2021 or earlier/later upon agreement.


The Centre for Fish and Wildlife Health (FIWI) is an institute at the Veterinary Faculty, University of Bern. Work at the FIWI entails research on basic and applied questions in fish and wildlife health, as well as the provision of accredited diagnostic services for private customers, local administration and federal agencies. Diagnostics at the FIWI is part of national monitoring and surveillance programmes in Switzerland.

TasksThe principal task of the position is diagnostic pathology. This entails the maintenance and continued development of high-quality diagnostics (necropsy, documentation, molecular diagnostics, collaboration with other diagnostic units in house, reporting, development/maintenance of processes and accreditation standards) of the entire spectrum of endemic free-ranging animals except fish and crayfish, as well as farmed deer. The position also entails teaching and supervision of postgraduate veterinary students and assistants.



Other tasks include teaching of wildlife health and disease content in the veterinary curriculum, the contri-bution of pathological expertise to ongoing research projects and interaction with administration, customers and stakeholders. The development of own lines of research and an increase of employment level through independently acquired third-party funds is possible.RequirementsThe candidate should have a solid experience in pathology including histopathology (an ECVP or ACVP diploma is advantageous but not a condition). A concept of quality management and the ability to work in a customer-oriented manner is required to fulfil the role. Candidates with expertise and experience in molecu-lar diagnostics (PCR, qPCR) are preferred. Demonstrated experience in the coordination of projects and/or project teams, in the design of processes, and in the supervision of students is beneficial. A reasonable written and oral command of German, with a clear vision on how to attain a very good level within a short timeframe, is an absolute prerequisite. Experience in wildlife pathology as well as some didactics education is advantageous but not strictly necessary. Experience and interest in amphibian/reptile pathology, or another specialization that adds value to the FIWI, is welcome. The department houses, in addition to the FIWI, research- and diagnostic units in domestic and zoo animal pathology, bacteriology, parasitology, virology and immunology. Collaborations with clinical units in Bern or in Zurich are possible.
