The Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join the Retinal Organoid Platform.

IOB is a research institute combining basic and clinical research. Its mission is to drive innovations in understanding vision and its diseases and develop new therapies for vision loss. It is a place where your expertise will be valued, your abilities challenged, and your knowledge expanded.

The Retinal Organoid Platform uses human retinal organoids derived from pluripotent stem cells of patients with retinal disease as models. Therefore, the Retinal Organoid Platform is involved in establishing a biobank of pluripotent stem cells of patients with retinal disease as a resource for IOB researchers and collaborators around the globe.


Your position



  • Reprogramming of human induced pluripotent stem cells from patient samples;

  • Full characterization of the reprogrammed induced pluripotent stem cells;

  • In vitro culture of human pluripotent stem cells and mutant retinal organoids;

  • Analysis of retinal organoids by various histology and microscopy techniques;

  • Organization and maintenance of the IOB biobank;

  • Involvement in lab management and organization;

  • Close collaboration with group members and IOB groups.


Your profile



  • Biologielaborant/in (or equivalent education) with several years of work experience or Bachelor's/Master's Degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology or related field;

  • Experience with human induced pluripotent stem cell reprogramming;

  • Experience with the characterization of human induced pluripotent stem cells;

  • Independence in the planning, conductance, analysis and troubleshooting of human induced pluripotent stem cell culture;

  • Willingness to work with Sendai virus, lentivirus, human tissue and blood;

  • Enthusiasm to establish and optimize new protocols and techniques;

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and skilled with computers;

  • Good written and verbal communications skills;

  • Some work during weekends and public holidays;

  • Fluency in oral and written English.
