Senior Assistant in Applied Combinatorial Optimization

60%-100%, Zurich, temporary

The Combinatorial Optimization Group at ETH Zurich, headed by Prof. Rico Zenklusen, has an opening for a Senior Assistant in Applied Combinatorial Optimization.

Job description

We are looking for an outstanding candidate with a PhD in Mathematical Optimization or a related field, and strong interests in real-world mathematical optimization challenges, teaching, student supervision, knowledge transfer, and coding/software aspects related to modern applied combinatorial optimization techniques. Apart from a teaching load of about one course per semester and the supervision of student projects, the candidate is expected to help strengthen and expand the applied profile of the group, which complements a strong theoretical research thrust. The position provides exciting opportunities to contribute and shape existing applied projects and spawn new ones, typically in collaboration with industrial partners.

The Combinatorial Optimization Group is part of the Institute for Operations Research within the Mathematics Department of ETH Zurich. We are a well-connected research group with strong international visibility. We offer a very stimulating work environment with a highly competitive salary and benefits, excellent working conditions and infrastructure in the center of Zurich, and generous travel support. The position is initially for one year with the possibility of extension for up to a total of three years. The starting date is flexible within 2021.

Your profile

Apart from a PhD in Mathematical Optimization or a related field and strong interests in both applied mathematical optimization and teaching/mentoring, we are seeking candidates with strong coding skills, excellent knowledge of mathematical programming libraries and techniques (in particular for integer, mixed-integer, and preferably also convex/nonlinear optimization), a solid theoretical foundation in Mathematical Optimization, excellent academic qualifications, and strong communication skills.
