Senior European/US Patent Attorney – Based in Basel, Switzerland


Job Description


Roche’s Intellectual Property Department is seeking a senior EP/US patent attorney to lead its RNA Molecule Research IP department based both in Switzerland and Denmark (near Copenhagen). This individual will lead and IP team in a highly competitive area of science while empowering and developing great patent attorneys and staff across a dynamic & diverse global organization. The position will be located in Basel and will report directly to the Head of Patents Basel. It will entail travelling to Denmark on a regular basis.


Key Responsibilities include:



  • Lead a team of individual contributors by providing leadership, empowerment, and coaching for your team in a global matrix environment, inspiring your team to perform at their best, optimizing their growth opportunities and capabilities to successfully contribute and operate in the global IP environment. 

  • Pro-active engagement as a member of the Roche IP Leadership team in Basel.

  • Develop & drive adaptive and creative strategies for Roche’s RNA therapeutics unit, in a fast evolving area of science, seeking opportunities and mitigating risks.

  • Effective and impactful management of Roche’s RNA therapeutics IP assets: management of global intellectual property rights including drafting & prosecuting patent portfolios, licensing transactions, due diligence assessments, freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity analyses, risk evaluation and mitigation strategies for RNA therapeutics, personalized therapeutics and other novel therapeutic modalities.

  • Provide strategic advice & strategy in all intellectual property-related transactions and patent challenges/litigations. 

  • Effectively and pro-actively partner with stakeholders at all levels of the global organization and across all phases of research, drug development & commercialization to provide business enabling strategy, counseling and options both in Basel and in Copenhagen.

  • Simplify practices and processes in an increasingly complex environment, driving change when necessary at RNA therapeutics IP to maximize value & mitigate risk-using fit for purpose solution while delivering high quality legal strategy & counsel.  

  • Sustainably build enduring, productive external relationships with outside counsel and third party collaborators & partners.

  • The successful candidate enjoys work in a fast-paced, diverse, & global environment while seeking to move the needle in bringing great medicines to patients. 


Requirements:



  • Demonstrated experience and track record of success in:

    • Building & leveraging global IP portfolios;

    • Developing & implementing global IP strategies or initiatives, both substantive & operational;

    • Leading or directing significant IP transactions including but not limited to due diligences, M&A, complex collaborations, asset acquisitions and settlement agreements;

    • Leading or directing adverse proceedings such as patent challenges and/or litigation;

    • Prior experience in leading teams & managing people directly or matrixed is a plus;

    • Leading as a member of a Basel patent leadership team within a corporate environment;


  • 5+ years of experience post EQE / US patent qualification is preferred;

  • Experience in patent portfolio creation, strategy, and counseling;

  • Experience with early stage, clinical development, and launched products as well as manufacturing & technology based IP is required;

  • At least 4 years of experience in a pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, or biotechnology corporation;

  • An advanced degree in chemistry or biology, preferably in chemistry or other area relevant to pharmaceutical IP practice. 

  • Acting as a role model in, for example, clear communication, active listening, composure under pressure, solution-oriented mindset, collaboration across local & global teams, preserving in the face of obstacles, tackling new challenges with curiosity and openness to learning, effectively utilizing available resources.
