The Research Unit Land Change Science investigates the interplay of ecological and anthropogenic influences and its impact on landscape development. Within the Research Group Landscape Ecology we are looking for two years aScientific Employee to lead SWISS CATCHMENT research project (70%)You will map the biodiversity of various taxonomic groups in 1200 river catchments in Switzerland. The data will be gathered from different sources and will be complemented by planning and conducting your own field work. You will develop models to identify the underlying factors that shape biodiversity in different taxonomic groups. Using both present and historic data, temporal changes in biodiversity can be addressed and future projections of species richness can be made. The results will be published in scientific journals but should also help policy makers to take more informed decisions for the protection of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in Switzerland. With a strong interest for scientific understanding of biodiversity to join an interdisciplinary team spread over several institutions, the successful applicant will be based in the research group at WSL in Birmensdorf and work in close collaboration with a team of scientists located at both WSL and ETH Zürich.You have a master’s degree in biology or environmental sciences and comprehensive knowledge in R and GIS. Experiences in handling large datasets and modelling are highly desirable. For both communication and the writing of scientific papers excellent English and German skills are required. You are able to work independently, organised and careful, and have experiences in other research projects related to biodiversity. You should be motivated and demonstrate a high level of team spirit.
