Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. To strengthen Eawag’s position as a leading research institution in trace element biogeochemistry in natural and engineered aquatic systems, Eawag invites applications for aLab Facility Manager (100 %) in analytical biogeochemistry of trace elementsThe lab facility manager will manage the cluster of trace element (TE) analytics within Eawag’s new Mass Spectrometry facility. Main tasks of the position will be i) being the central contact person for all users of the TE cluster, ii) providing technical and scientific advice on TE analysis, iii) training users in TE analyses, iv) managing instruments and infrastructure, v) developing and applying new analytical methods involving LCICP-MS technology and other hyphenated ICP-MS systems, vi) contributing to scientific papers and exchanging with other experts on analytical TE development, and, viii) leading and collaborating on scientific equipment proposals.
To successfully fulfil these tasks, the candidate should have:
A PhD degree in analytical chemistry/environmental chemistry
Several years of research experience (e.g., as a postdoctoral researcher and/or lab manager) and a publication record proving analytical development and application in environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry and/or aquatic chemistry
Hands-on experience with hyphenated ICP-MS technology and the development of LC-ICP-MS methods and their application in environmental sciences
Experience in sample pre-treatment methods (extraction, pre-concentration) and analysis of complex sample matrices
Experience in advanced data treatment (e.g., peak fitting, multivariate statistics)
Experience in student training and/or supervision
Excellent communication skills
Experience with organic analytical techniques is an additional asset
The candidate’s application must include:
A motivation letter
A description of the candidate’s experience in analytical biogeochemistry of trace elements
A statement of future (5-10 years horizon) interests for development of analytical trace element methods
A curriculum vitae including a list of publications, information on experience with supervision of students and/or other teaching/mentoring activities
Names and contact information of at least three academic references
Eawag and its planned Mass Spectrometry Facility offer world class infra-structure and a stimulating research environment.
