Job Description

We are looking for a Full-Stack Software Developer to join CERN.

You will be part of one of the product development teams where you will collaborate with agile team members, share responsibilities, contribute to pair programming and knowledge-sharing sessions, participate in code reviews and agile ceremonies. You will have a chance to work in various aspects of software development. You will take on the following responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and test software (mostly web applications), using Java and .NET, together with frameworks in their respective ecosystems (e.g. Spring Boot), as primary backend technology.


• Use front-end techniques like semantic and accessible HTML, CSS, JavaScript (ES6+), and HTML5 APIs.


• Interact with (mostly relational) databases using SQL.


• Extract and visualise data in forms, reports and dashboards.


• Configure and writing software to integrate standard third-party provided software solutions run on premise or available in the cloud.


• Maintain, support and enhance existing (legacy) systems.


• Provide end user support and carry out data migrations and software upgrades.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;


• You have graduated, or are about to graduate, with a university degree (BSc or MSc level in computer science,engineering or another relevant course) and have no more than 4 years’ relevant experience after obtaining your degree;


• Kindly note that experience prior to the latest obtained degree will not be taken into account for the calculation of your overall years of experience.

Essential skills and experience:

• Use of object-oriented programming languages (e.g. Java, C#, Python);


• Version control systems’ experience, particularly, Git;


• Being at ease working with both new and legacy systems;


• Initial experience with web development technologies (e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related frameworks, such as React);


• Initial experience with relational databases and SQL.

Desired technical skills:

• Exposure in working in a lean/agile environment;


• Experience in working with data warehouses, data integration / ETL tools, message/event processing systems;


• Knowledge of reporting/dashboarding tools and techniques.

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

• An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months.


• A stipend ranging from 5,281 to 6,558 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).


• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.


• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.


• 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
