The Position


Roche Research and Development (pRED) Oncology translates world-class science into medical innovation through a diversity of technologies and talents located across four research centers worldwide (Basel, Munich, Welwyn and Zurich).


We are seeking an exceptional, highly motivated and talented Research Associate to join the team as a Lab Manager.


You will be a member of the Molecular Targeted Therapies (MTT) group focused on the discovery of novel anti-cancer agents and is located at Roche Innovation Center Basel. MTT is composed of approximately 30 cancer biologists supported by Roche’s Small Molecule Research (SMR) and Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) functions in state-of-the art molecular and cellular pharmacology laboratories.


Core tasks and responsibilities:



  • Placing and expediting orders for project-specific reagents and biological samples in consultation with research associates & lab heads. Verifying receipt of supplies. Including identification of cost savings.

  • Safety Health and Environment (SHE): Organize and manage regulatory lab safety compliance including institutional protocols and licenses related to biological and chemical safety. Supporting SHE representatives and lab members for WHRA and for inspections. Organize and manage BSL1/2 lab safety documentation.

  • Organizing/creating shared consumables stocks. Maintaining optimal stock inventory level, anticipating needed supplies and maintaining a universal database of reagents.

  • Managing and updating SED and other inventories of lab equipment. Organizing service contracts and coordinating laboratory equipment maintenance, pipet calibration, yearly freezer and fridge cycling.

  • Together with lab associates, ensure that the laboratories are cleaned/sanitized and kept in an orderly manner. Daily removal of laboratory waste.

  • Manage material & sample shipping.

  • On-boarding new staff - Build an appropriate on-boarding protocol and lead on-boarding of new employees.


Who You Are


You are a self-motivated biologist with excellent organizational and communication skills, fully committed to team effort but able to work in an independent fashion.


For this position, we expect the following qualifications:



  • Apprentice or BSc cell biology, preferable with a focus in oncology or immunology

  • 2+ years of experience in a biology research lab with responsibilities of a lab manager

  • Prior experience in the pharmaceutical industry required

  • Familiarity with cell culture, basic molecule biology techniques and compound screening is required

  • Familiarity with standard lab equipment, automation and IT tools is required.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required, German being highly desirable.

  • Experience in ordering lab equipment, material and managing inventory

  • Reliable and solid working manner

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and problem solving skills

  • Knowledge about processes and infrastructure at the Roche Innovation Center Basel is desirable

  • Experience in Laboratory management is desirable
