Discovery Area Leader, Rare Blood Disorders

The Position


We are developing cutting edge therapies to treat Rare Blood Disorders. As a member of the Pharma Research and Early Development group, you will be part of an international group that includes scientists and clinicians that are developing hematology, immunology and oncology medicines for the future. We're currently looking for a creative and experienced scientist with strong expertise in coagulation/Rare Blood Disorders a proven track record in managing target identification and validation in a drug discovery setting, strong leadership skills, and the proven ability to effectively lead projects in a matrix organization. You will be responsible for leading a team of scientists that brings new targets into the portfolio and advances them to clinics.


These responsibilities capture a portion of what your work will look like:



  • Lead early drug discovery projects within multidisciplinary teams up to clinical candidate generation

  • Collaboratively design and interpret complex preclinical experimental studies for the validation and characterization of targets or therapeutic agents in the area of rare blood disorders. May direct and oversee experimental design and results of associates and post-doctoral scientists

  • Champion new innovative initiatives in rare blood disorders including the evaluation of external opportunities

  • Act as an experienced resource in project teams, and demonstrate clear and professional verbal and written communication

  • Maintain and build a network of external expertise and is well-connected to the drivers of new and emerging scientific innovation and technologies in this fast-progressing field

  • People management including coaching and mentoring junior scientists

Should you possess these qualifications/skills, we look forward to receiving your application:



  • You possess a PhD degree in Life Sciences (cellular/ molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology), or a closely related discipline with 5-10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Significant scientific accomplishments and successful collaborations documented by publications in high-impact journals 

  • Expertise in coagulation, hemoglobinopathies or other non-malignant hematology preferred

  • Gene therapy expertise desirable

  • Strong technical and theoretical background/expertise in coagulation/non-malignant hematology with a proven track-record in good experimental design. Experience in back-translation of clinical data is a plus

  • Ability to effectively present scientific data and concepts to colleagues, teams and management is critical, as well as representing company by presenting at external meetings

  • Skillfully able to interact effectively with people, both internally and externally

  • You can communicate fluently in English

  • Excellent data management and record-keeping skills
