Roche’s Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) is structured by therapeutic areas. The Immunology Therapeutic Area is part of I2O, the Immunology, Infectious Diseases and Ophthalmology (I2O) Discovery and Translational Area. Within I2O, the Early Development (ED) group is responsible for developing and executing the early development clinical strategies and plans (Phase 1 to 2) to deliver transformative therapies that provide meaningful improvement to patients.


We are currently looking for a creative, experienced, motivated and enthusiastic Medical Director to join our Immunology team.


The Position


As a Medical Director in the Immunology ED group, you will lead early stage clinical projects through the design and implementation from proof-of-concept to Phase 2b trials to transform molecules into new medicines for patients with high unmet need gastroenterology diseases. Further with your scientific and medical expertise you will provide strategic input to build and strengthen a portfolio from internal programs and external innovation efforts at different development stages.


Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:



  • Provides strategic impact and scientific insights into drug developmental projects across multiple stages of R&D

  • Develops and implements clinical strategies and plans that contribute to the advancement
    of specific pRED I2O projects

  • Designs and manages global project strategies; initiates and implements critical cross-functional strategic activities impacting drug development

  • Key member in Early Development Project Teams driving projects from Discovery (Clinical Candidate Selection) to hand-over to late-stage Product Development (Phase 2b)

  • Develops and owns the Clinical Development Plan and Target Product Profile in early development

  • Key Early Development representative on discovery projects

  • Chairs cross-functional project team and scientific meetings

  • Represents ED Immunology function in project teams, within Discovery and Translational Area and in Governance interactions

  • Pro-actively drives relevant stakeholder engagement globally

  • Co-responsible for scientific career development of clinical scientists within therapeutic area

  • Ideally also acts as key clinical scientific contact or medical monitor to address selected medical queries

  • Represents Roche at congresses and to local and international authorities

  • Interacts with regulatory authorities as needed or requested


Managerial Responsibilities:



  • May work individually or as Matrix Lead or People Lead

  • Supervises, mentors, motivates and provides successful career development for scientists and/or team members

  • Integrates pRED Guiding Principles into everyday behaviors and activities


Scientific Innovation and Influence



  • Directs, reviews publications, presentations of others

  • Has contributed to advancements in own field of science

We are looking for these qualifications:



  • Medical Doctorate (MD) degree and board certification or clinical experience in Gastroenterology required

  • More than 5 years experience in the pharmaceutical / biotech industry

  • Excellent understanding of pre-clinical / clinical research, and clinical drug development in the field of gastrointestinal diseases is another strong asset

  • Inspiring role model; able to attract and retain scientific talent

  • Recognized by peers for scientific excellence (i.e., subject matter expertise across broad scientific area/multiple areas/clinical specialties; appreciated for scientific vision and strategy; recognized for scientific rigor and analytical evaluation skills)

  • Excellent leadership, strong communication and direct or matrix management track record are expected

  • Team player, relationship builder with ability to collaborate globally across functions and departments

  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment and in a matrix structure

  • The Medical Director role and level will be dependent on seniority and expertise of the incumbent
