PhD position: Photocatalysis with colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals

100%, Zurich, temporary

The position is open in Functional Inorganic Materials Group (KovalenkoLab, ETH Zurich). The research activities in FIMG are focused on challenges related to the chemistry, physics, and applications of inorganic materials ranging from nanostructures to powders, thin films, and single crystals. Central to our efforts is the synthesis of inorganic materials and their integration or self-assembly into multifunctional solid-state structures. Synthetic work and rigorous materials characterization are the cornerstones of our research.

Job description

This project aims at the development of a photocatalyst based on semiconductor nanocrystals, such as those made of metal halides, chalcogenides or pnictides. Central to the project will be the synthesis of these nanocrystals and an investigation of the mechanism of photocatalysis for each material.

The research activities will involve:

  • synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals

  • characterization and modification of the surface chemistry of nanocrystals

  • photocatalytic transformations of organic molecules triggered by various semiconductor nanocrystals under light

The preferred start is in the fall of 2020 or upon agreement.

Your profile

  • Candidates should have recently obtained a master degree in chemistry with outstanding grades

  • Excellent knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry and strong experimental background in chemistry

  • Experience in catalysis will be beneficial
