PhD position in cartilage / intervertebral disc tissue engineering

100 % / 01.10.2020 / 3-4 years

The Tissue Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Biomedicine of the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland, directed by Prof. Ivan Martin, is currently seeking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to work on an European Research Council (ERC) funded project. The interdisciplinary Tissue Engineering team consists of biologists, chemists, engineers and clinicians investigating mechanisms of tissue degeneration, regeneration and repair with the aim to translate this knowledge into innovative clinical approaches for musculoskeletal tissue regeneration.

Your position
In the framework of this ERC Synergy project, the PhD candidate will specifically work on a project that aims at deciphering mechanisms regulating the regenerative potential of nasal chondrocytes. In particular, primary human nasal chondrocytes and their subpopulations will be characterised at cellular and molecular level – i.a. using (clonal) primary cell culture and tissue engineering techniques, as well as applying CRISPR/Cas9 technologies - with the final aim to identify their regenerative potential for the repair of intervertebral discs.

Your profile

  • You hold a Master level in Biomedical/Life Sciences or equivalent

  • You have experience in molecular and cellular biology (mandatory)

  • Ideally you have experience in Tissue Engineering/Regenerative Medicine or fundamental cartilage/intervertebral disc biology (desirable)

  • You like to work within a dynamic team and at the same time you are capable to work independently (under supervision) to address hypothesis-driven questions

  • You have excellent communication and presentation skills

  • You bring along outstanding motivation and enthusiasm to unravel scientific questions

If you fulfill these requirements, we very much look forward to receive your application.

We offer you
We offer a truly exciting and versatile project in an inspiring environment of translational medicine. The Department of Biomedicine provides a research environment with excellent research facilities, ideal for building a scientific career. The city of Basel, located at the borders to both France and Germany, is one of leading pharmaceutical and biotechnological centers in the world. For more information, please, visit:
