Job Description
250! That’s the number of data scientists leading a digital revolution at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research.
We are looking for a highly driven and experienced data scientist with strong strategic and leadership skills. You are an expert computational scientist with demonstrated vision in cheminformatics and a proven track record of impact in drug discovery programs. You are looking for the next step in your career, leading an innovative cheminformatics team shaping the strategy and vision. In the Chemical Biology & Therapeutics Data Science (CBT DS) group at Novartis Institutes for Biochemical Research (NIBR). There you will be part of a larger Data Science team with expertise in bioinformatics, computational biology, screening analytics, data engineering and predictive modelling. We will leverage our complementary skills to gain a molecular understanding of disease etiology, to identify novel targets and chemical matter, assess preclinical model translation relevance and patient population heterogeneity. The team’s mission is to impact early stage drug discovery and advance biomedical research using innovative computational approaches with emphasis on data stewardship for predictive science. This is a unique opportunity in an interdisciplinary environment at the intersection of chemical biology, genomics, biophysics, cheminformatics, and molecular modeling.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Evolving the vision and implementing the strategic direction for a global data science team focused on lead discovery in early pharmaceutical research.
• Impacting early drug discovery with innovative computational approaches.
• Engaging as an insightful and pro-active member of the CBT Data Science leadership team and member of the departmental portfolio group assessing drug candidate projects.
• Coaching and mentoring of the next generation of data science leaders. Navigation of a =complex matrix of collaborative partners.
• Developing and applying data workflows, informatics solutions, and machine learning approaches to impact lead discovery projects.
Minimum requirements
• PhD in biology, chemistry, cheminformatics, or computational chemistry, ideally a relevant postdoc, then ~10+ years of experience and success in a drug discovery setting
• Deep expertise with computational biology, including cheminformatics (similarity searching, SAR analysis, chemogenomics data mining) and compound-protein structure modelling. You are an expert computational scientist with demonstrated vision in cheminformatics and impact on drug discovery programs, used to successfully leading interdisciplinary teams and cross-disciplinary collaborations across strategic and operational topics
• A publication history demonstrating innovation in computational biology solution development and/or application
• Hands-on experience with analysis of experimental results; in particular, utilization of chemical and structural information to guide experiment design and analysis
• Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and apply project-tailored analysis workflows to answer scientific questions
• Practical experience with a scripting language (Python, R), modelling tools, and familiarity with relational databases and SQL and experience with cluster computing frameworks (Spark, AWS, HPC)
• An understanding of the processes behind target discovery and validation, assay development, lead discovery and structure-based design
• Excellent scientific communication and effective data visualization skills: fluent/advanced written and oral English with very strong presentation and ‘story-telling’ skills
Desirable requirements:
• Guided teams engineering complex chemical biology data for end-to-end enabling solutions.
