Job Description

The Oncology Disease Area at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is looking for a Bioinformatics Scientist to help develop cutting-edge cancer therapies to benefit patients.

You will join the Oncology Data Science group which provides computational biology expertise to the department, with a focus on applications of high-throughput genomic and biomarker data for target identification, drug discovery, and clinical development.

Your Responsibilities:

Your tasks will involve, but not be limited to:

• Working with drug discovery teams to apply genomic profiling to target discovery, drug mechanism elucidation, and patient stratification efforts.

• Contributing to translational research efforts by working with teams to contextualize various biological datasets, and by supporting translational genomics, model characterization, and data mining efforts.

• Improve accessibility of this information for the broader community through the development of tools that will allow the data to be explored and visualized interactively.

• Develop innovative approaches to mine novel insights from this resource, potentially including (but not limited to) the areas of target identification, validation and de-risking; drug repurposing; resolving mechanism of action; patient stratification; biomarker identification; and disease progression or response prediction.

• Collaborate with data scientists and domain experts from a number of different disease areas in order to obtain and understand disease-specific datasets.

Duration of this internship: 6 months

Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:

• Master’s Degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics or computer science

• Fluency in English (oral/written)

• Demonstrated expertise in statistics and statistical learning is required, with practical experience applying machine learning a plus.

• Experience with current analysis methods for next-generation sequencing data is a plus

• Fluency in one or more programming languages with bioinformatics applications (e.g. Python, R)
